Vaaranam Aayiram – What I felt

In temples in South India, once we eat the ‘prasadam’‘ given in the temple we usually would go to the basin to wash our hands. In the basin or literally along the basin, there would be lots of stuff floating around which may even contain the puke of some four year old or prasadam remains of some other people or maybe the remains of the ghee bath given to Lord Hanuman. There is usually an aura in temples which is a mixture of what has been mentioned above. But we usually inhale the best odour in temples and leave the worst ones.

Vaaranam Aayiram is one such case wherein the best scenes of the movie can be seen again leaving aside the not so good ones or literally sending them along the drain.

How I saw Vaaranam Aayiram is a good story. I have been always wanting to watch the movie ever since its inception. The Goutham-Surya-Harris Jayaraj trio had made waves in the Tamil Industry since “Kaaka Kaaka”. So I was in a urge to watch the movie once it got released. But the movie hit the theatres when the semester exams were going on. So I missed the movie on the first day. But since I had an oppurtunity to go out on November 16 (Sunday), I was put with no option but to see the movie on the third day.

The movie begins with a negative feeling showcasing the death of father Surya. But that provides a good start to the movie. Father Surya’s acting is what has to be put in quotes when mentioning the movie. What an amazing performance-it was.

I have seen the movie two times already – once with my friends and the next time with my parents. I elaborate here how I felt watching the movie with both my parents and friends.

WITH FRIENDS

We hurried so that we would not miss even a single scene in the movie. The traffic was heavy on November 16 because the Chief Minister was visiting Coimbatore for some reason. But we reached the movie on time.

I was glued to the movie since the start. The chemistry between Krishnan and Malini in the movie was amazing. The antics played by Surya in order to woo Meghna was lovely. The mature love that takes place between Surya and Priya is worth mentioning too.

I loved each and every scene in the movie when watching for the first time – be it the first half or the second half. The first half was fantastic and moving. I didnt feel anything odd with the second half since I was totally glued and I would have accepted anything the director showcases.

When coming out of the movie – I felt that it is an amazing movie and one of the best Tamil movies I have ever seen. I had a huge relief and I felt that it was a movie that should be seen my parents. I thought about the movie on the way back to the hostel and even in my room even though I had exams the next day. The movie made a great impact on me.

WITH PARENTS

I urged my dad to watch the movie. He finally accepted. So for the second time, I watched the movie with my parents. I felt the same emotions running through me all over the movie, except that this time during the second half, I felt the kidnapping sequence was a bit long. It slowed down the pace of the movie. News was that, the director had cut a few scenes pertaining to Divya-Surya in Dehradun and a few scenes in the final rescue mission.

I personally felt after watching the movie for the second time that the love scenes should have been included in the movie and the director instead would have cut the unnecessary scenes in the kidnapping sequence.

Meanwhile, everything about the movie was commendable even after watching for the second time.

The camera work was fantastic.

‘Nenjukkul Peidhidum’ – visualizations were perfect. Who would have thought that“Oh Shanthi Shanthi” bit in the song would have dance steps in it. Wonderful visualization for the song. I loved the song right from the very beginning.

My parents were moved by the movie. My dad was totally into the movie and he liked the way in which the hit songs of the 80’s were sung by Surya. He felt that the ‘Anjale’ song was out of context and the drug-addict part of the movie was too much. Moreover he had nothing else to say about the movie. He loved it. He commented, “This is a movie that I would love watching if I were given a remote in my hand. Some of the scenes were dragging but the other scenes I loved a lot”.

This is a totally natural movie and totally worth watching. This movie is said to be the Magnum Opus of director Gautham. My personal opinion is that  Tamil Cinema has entered a new dimension with this movie. We need more directors like Gautham and more actors like Surya.

Hats off to Gautham and Surya..!!
